My biggest fear in life is not something I believe to be being afraid of the deep anxieties of heights, spiders, and such but rather the idea of becoming irrelevant, of sinking deeper into life without being noticed, without being remembered. The thought of living a life where I do not make any dent in this world and leave a legacy filled with empty what ifs and could have been is worse.
To be somebody who is recognized and makes a dent in this world, one has to have an intimate psychological desire that makes him want to make this world a better place. It is the belief that I can do something positive, no matter how small it is. The fear of oblivion chills a man, and it is terrifying to imagine one's life as consisting only of a still and imperfect shadow.
Unlike a physical threat, this is perilous, unique, and multifaceted. Fear of oblivion can be a missed chance, an opportunity to scream, or a project that is accomplished poorly. Always being on guard against being forgotten is tiring. Rather than completing the task, it can be more of a driving factor.
Nevertheless, tackling this phobia has also compelled me to search for opportunities to effect change, venture beyond my safety zones, and interact with my environment more meaningfully. This irrational fear powers my will to work, participate, and create change, even on a micro-level.
In conclusion, the idea of being irrelevant can be scary. It encourages active living, making a difference, setting milestones, and attempting to build something that survives and matters long after death. It is an opportunity to actively and noticeably participate in life. That serves more as a guide to enjoy the now and take every single opportunity, which seems to be most superficial as it appears, to create an impression that will last longer than the impact attempt itself.
